Rapid Fire! LRDG

After seeing some beautifully painted LRDG in the Rapid Fire! FB and after the release of Altaya's LRDG Chevrolets, I just had to have a small force of those. Reading about the Barce raid inspired me to make threee chevies and 3 jeeps (yes, too many, only one was necessary in RF terms...).

The Altaya Chevrolets were repainted as I attached too many figures, stowage and weapons that needed drilling and glueing.

The arab headdress was made with GreenStuff, as well as most of the interior stowage.

Monty (Matchbox) itself gave a hand as he is seated with legs borrowed from a Preiser german figure, the one that is playing cards.

The binoculars figure is the body of the Matchbox Humber figure and the legs of the Esci 25prd seated gunner.

The striking Pink scheme, useful for the morning and late day.

All figure came out of the spare boxes, and included the Airfix Jeep driver; Esci commandos and Hasegawa tank crew.

28mm LOTR Minas Tirith

And now for Minas Tirith. It was mainly made in heavy card and the usual styrofoam. This piece are in fact some 20 pieces, and the final result is this one.

The parts are separate for easy storage and space. One of this days I will show you my Osgiliath, but it still has to be built.

Not as many levels as in the movie. Just trying to pick the flavour of the movie´s model and, one day, wargaming it.

Kinder Eggs are good for eating and modelling.

My kid still must be thinking: " were is my cowboy´s tree?".

I built eleven of the formidable trebuchets Minas tirith was defended by. Seven are GW (glups!).

28mm LOTR Helms Deep

During those mad years of LOTR I built a large collection of GW fantasy 28mm figures and accessories.

But the larger models- the fortressses and cities, for instances - had to be scratchbuilt.

Here it goes my approach to Helms Deep, using mainly styrofoam.

The door is one of the few elements made of wood and it opens with the help of some pegs.

The broken statues were made of Green Stuff.

The stairs are plastic glued to the styrofoam.

1815 Waterloo- 28mm Marcognet Division

Marcognet Division with General D´Erlon himself leading. There is a mix of metal and plastic Perry minis and Victrix.

Flags are out of the box paper flags by Perry Miniatures.

The Aide de Camp of D´Erlon is also Perry metal. A nice moving figure climbing atop of his horse.

Some figures, like the 1st voltigeur, has Victrix and Perry parts.

The famous FN 100 Perry reference (plastic french Inf.) has loads of modelling possibilities allowing the Pokalem and the Bonnet the police to be portrayed in many figures, besides being able to create many different moving and firing figures.

Drummers and flag bearers are Victrix plastics.

Rapid Fire! 20mm Painted Bronekaters

Finally I managed to paint the the Bronekaters....
I used web info for that purpose. Colours aren´t probably the most accurate but the final result is acceptable.

First, car spray all over.

Acrylic Vallejo colours were used. Nothing special, just the ones I had around: Panzer Gray; Lutwaffe Blue and Light Blue.

The flags were hand painted as well as everything else in that "wargaming style" were we start from dark to lighter colours, drybrushing mostly.

The figures are German WWII Preiser, painted to look as soviet sailors.

The deck was painted with GW colours.

The river water was painted used the darkest green I had , followed by GW Snot Green drybrushing. The angle between the boat and the water was painted black. In the end a little of yellow and white was drybrushed over the black to simulate waves.

Rapid Fire! 20mm scratchbuilt Bronekater

Some time ago JF (Jorge Faria) of Brigada Tripeira placed some nice photos of his resin 1/144 Bronekater, which oppened my appetite for a 1/72nd scale one. Beautiful painted kit with an even more beautiful river ... You must see it at the Brigada tripeira site.

In this month MW (344) Andrew Hubback (MW publisher) placed a nice scratchbuilt Bronekater. However Andrew´s gunboat is a generic one - he warned about that in the article- and I intended to do something more historical.

So Internet showed me some very nice MIG 1/72nd and 1/35th scale and Boltaction 28mm Bronekaters, besides fantastic b/w photos and articles and those scratchbuilt and beautifully detailed 1/25th scale that even float and sail! Just surf the net and all you need is there.

So several options emerged. I chose Styrofoam as a base for the hull and plasticard (Evergreen ) for other parts.

Size was decided (31cm X 6,5cm). Then the generic shape both in styrofoam and Evergreen. Two T-34 turrets - one Zvezda T-34/43 and another Matchbox T-34/42- were placed inside a plastic ring of unknown origin.

The command house is a simple Evergreen box shaped to size .

A few days later all was ready.

One of the Bronekaters had a rear exposed 76,2 mm gun (45 mm I read somewhere?), intirely scratchbuilt and based in a solo b/w photo of a parked Bronekater.

The other one had a Katiushka rocket system taken from the Altaya model. The truck will be useful elsewhere. The deck T-28 turrets were adapted ex-Matchbox Honey turrets given to me by JF.

The anchors were made with Artesania Latina stuff.

The surplus parts of two Matchbox Flower class Corvettes were used for the engine deck.

The small T-28 turrets on top of the command house were made of two-part cement. All weapons systems have small pegs so the turrets can turn.

There are very few details on the deck floor as exaust tubing, etc would hinder movement to the naval infantry figures these gunboats are supposed to carry from time to time.

The bases are PVC sheets with plaster mixed with PVA glue to simulate water. The sides of the gunboats were sanded and given some coats of PVA.

The main image used (internet/images/ and you are there). There are other with the Katiushkas.

Next is painting.

Rapid Fire! Lord Lovat Special Service Brigade in Sword beach 6 June 1944

Here they come: at 0820 Lord Lovat 4 commando hit the beach in front of the Riva-Bella casino.

The true casino had nothing to do with that magnificent building portrayed in "The Longest Day" film.
Instead the germans destroyed the area in front of the casino looking at the sea, the casino itself, and fortified the place.

Sentry Models has or had the film version on sale which is a lovely piece.

I based this scratchbuilt complex in "D-Day Then and Now", a two book study of the battle which is probably one of the best on the subject. It has only a few far away photos of the complex, so some items are not historically correct. Obviously the lovely photos on Colin Rumford Rapid Fire! D-Day were of great help to scale down the building.

On top of the complex I placed this resin Flak open emplacement that I bought for something else (I don´t remember the manufacturer, any help?) which from the photos seems to have been the model used on the true fortification.

The Casino included a 75mm of French origin. In this case a simple tubing of Evergreen on a carved hard styrofoam.

The SS brigade was modelled from the Esci; Revell and Matchbox British infantry boxes.

Lord Lovat was made out of the helmeted Esci officer with a Nato Matchbox Paratrooper beret.

Bagpiper Bill Millin was modelled in three parts: head from a somewhere bereted figure, the body from Esci 8th army bagpiper and legs from another Esci figure.

LCI (s).

Everything was built on the sturdy side an inspiration I received from the Britannia Miniatures style.

The LCI (s) were made in various materials after seeing many photos of the vessel: card, plasticard, wood, etc.

The late Dave Howitt from Britannia Miniatures sent me these metal AA Oerlikons. I miss talking to him on the phone, he seemed a very nice person as he was always patient bearing with me. A great hug to you wherever you are. It was a very sad day for me when I read you were gone.

The bridge officers were taken from various Airfix kits and the Matchbox Flower Class Corvette.

Some of the berets were cuted and burned helmets modelled with the fingers while hot and melting.

Now for some support: Revell Cromwell turned a Centaur CS with scratchbuilt 95mm gun and Britannia figure.

Rapid Fire! 1/72nd 8th Army armour El alamein

Bishop (Esci) with added trailer (Esci 25pdr) and bins. The commander is an Esci modern soft plastic figure with his arm lowered.

PC: the photos are dark because most attacks during the El alamein campaign were made in night time... just for you to know.

This Crusader 2Pdr is a Armourfast double kit with added stowage and Bessa and Esci crewman.

Rapid Fire! Lehr Battalion Ramcke Brigade El Alamein 1942

This is my latest batch of figures and stands for the Ramcke Bgde. The Lehr (instruction) battalion was the heaviest of the brigade with artillery and AT guns. In this photo you can also see 4 more Pak36 for the AT battalion of the brigade (1 missing to finish the unit).

The work started with a scratch built 75mm recoiless gun in Evergreen and Rocco small spare wheels.

The figures are the usual mix of bodies and heads from several brands all happily glued with Loctite super plastics/soft plastics.

Painted version with Kettenkrad.

The Kettenkrad (Hasegawa). After a missed experience trying to copy(sorry Mr Hasegawa) in resin the small thing I decided to paint the only I had. Nowadays silicone, at least the one I´ve been buying, glues to the plastic matrix, which makes the duplication of parts impossible at least for me.

Worldwide request: PC, JMM, JF and the rest, could you give me spare Kettenkrad? I need 10 more. If not I will have to spend a lot of money ordering Academy or Hasegawa kits just to use some sprues... I will pay you in the usual way... No,no it is not what you are thinking!!

The figure is an Airfix torso with Greenstuff arms. The vehicle has a number of stowage that was useful to hide the little pieces of silicone that got stucked. The FG42 gun in the rear was a way to justify why the left side artilleryman had a ammo belt across his chest, after forgeting to carve it off.

Disguised Pak 50mm. It had to be desguised because it is one more mock up built from a number of different parts, and with the distinctable and difficult shield (awfuly done) well hidden.

Rapid Fire! Battalion Huebner Ramcke Brigade El Alamein 1942

Last ones:

This is the Battalion Hubner from Oberst Ramcke Bgde. At least this is my lazy interpretation of this soldiers as they had a much more varied equipment and clothing. But as I am doing all 4 battalions and support units I had to find an easy way to do them all. And painting all with the same basic uniform is easier.

The figures serving the MMG and mortar (Valiant), the AT gun (Esci), etc are mainly conversions. All figures are Esci and Revell. There are also some smaller 1/76 Airfix , but these have Esci heads to scale them up.

Mixed and matched figures. Some are full conversions, other only have a new feldmutze, the majority are out of the box figures.

You can see a lonely Flamethrower in the middle, which is one more conversion from Esci Green Devils legs and Revell pioneer torso.

DAK Artillery (170mm and Lorraine 150mm) and Pz III´s

The Famo is a Revell kit and the 170mm Morserlaf is Skytrex. Revell also produces the Morserlaf, but the Skytrex kit is in metal and this piece was "heavy " artillery, so Skytrex was the obvious choice...

The figures are Skytrex and Revell soft plastic.

The Revell figure on the left is pulling the string to make the gun fire.

The pronged claws grabbing the piece to the ground were made in Evergreen. This is the fragility of this kit, as the Revell one is more detailed and has this parts to offer. Both kits are about the same price.

Now for the Sdkfz 135 Lorraines of the DAK. These are Skytrex metal kits, now produced with the hulks in resin, as metal price keeps on increasing and with this formula Skytrex keep very good prices.

One of the nice things about these vehicles is the unique camouflage. Four of these make the full complement for both Rapid Fire! DAK Pz divisions (two for 15Pz and two for 21PD).

The crew includes plastic figures, as some of the metal ones went to the Morserlaf.

These Pz III are Altaya (left, Pz III N ) and Italeri double kits (PzIII L).

The half tank crew man is an old Esci figure that belonged to the Kingtiger.

The great advantage of this double kit comparing to the Armorfast is the detailed hulk and wheels, on the other hand Armorfast offers the extra wheels to be carried laterally, which the Italeri doesn´t. So make your choice.

Either way these double kits now on the market are a good way to build armoured forces quickly and on the cheap side.

British M3 Lee

I had this kit for some 50-55 years already, at least. Originally it was intended to be destroyed by the DAK somewhere in Tunisia in 1943 in US colours, but the latest Rapid Fire! book by Richard Marsh forced it to the El Alamein battlefield alongside its cousins the M3 Grants.

As it is the single Lee I had to be built, it deserved some care and attention with extra detail like metal strings and a converted crew member, besides the usual boxes and rolled stuff.

ACW- Fire and Fury- 1/72nd McDougall brigade behind breastworks in Gettysburg

This is the first brigade of the last Union corps (XII) I still miss for the Union in Gettysburg. As I run out of figures i´m going back to WWII...Who doesn´t?

As this brigade spent most of its action in Gettysburg behind breastworks in Culp´s hill I modelled them as they should have looked in those days.

Another reason for this was that I was almost left of figures after another long marathon on some months painting ACW and the only figures I had were kneeling confederates, which turned bluecoats after all.

Rapid Fire! Tarawa 1943 in 20mm

I took some detailed photos of my Betio/Tarawa wargames table prior to the american 20 November 1943 landings, with the japanese dug in waiting for it... One of these days everything will have to be stored to prepare one more wargame (destined not to be wargamed, as usual).

This layout is scaled down to Rapid Fire! figure and weapons organisation.

The northwest defences with 140mm naval (open revetment) and a 70mm AA.

Opposite south. An 8 inch gun with its searchlight.

The crew of the 8 inch are old Atlantic figures transformed into artillerymen.

The 127mm twin naval guns.

Two Zeros in the airfield.

Several types of bunkers and dugouts protecting the south beach.

The latrines. Afraid of deseases ( there were 5000 japanese and Korean in the island) the japanese built this kind of latrines in the seashore. When the Marines landed they had bullets waiting and some strange things floating... small mines they thought?

The protections for field guns. You can see the separation between the tiles on the right. The whole island is divided in three large parts for ease of storage.

75mm model 88 in open revetment (Irregular Miniatures based but heavily transformed). The japanese soldiers are painted in a greenish tone as they are not regular infantry but SNLF (sort of, but not the same, as Marines).

140mm naval gun in the east tip of Betio.

The command bunker with an Ha-go type 95 nearby. While in the outside in the beginning of the battle, the japanese island CO was killed by US naval guns. So the defense of the island was left without proper command. Even so the japanese inflicted thousands of casualties on the Marines. Just imagine if Admiral Shibasaki had survived...

And that´s it. What as no brand is scratchbuilt in the most diverse materials - Evergreen; polistyrene tyles; wood, etc. The water is a tailored carpet. The trees were bought in two large bags in a pastry shop.

The pieces of terrain are all detached, as I intend to use some of them in other layouts, nevertheless they were built specifically for this scenario.

It took me some 2 or 3 months to build all this stuff. You need good information for accuracy and all the details were taken into account down to the last MG emplacement, its shape and size. In some books (Osprey campaign for instance) but also in the internet you will find loads of very good information , as the americans pay a lot of attention to Tarawa and the Pacific campaign having dedicated sites on the subject. I dont regret a second all this work as our hobby is a great way to learn and detail the past in an unique way.

One of these days i will show you the Marines and their LVT´, LCI´s, LCVP´s and LCVBCFDSRPGFSTVBFDGRTS´s...and their Destroyers (yes, in 1/72nd scale)...

DAK 1/72nd scale Diana 76,2mm self-propelled gun

These are the russian gunned Dianas used by the Afrika Korps. They have Hasegawa chassis, with the gun and protection made out of Evergreen plastic sheet and tubing. The figures are Revell and Hasegawa some of them heavily scratchbuilt.

Only 9 reached the DAK, but in spite of thin armour their 76,2 mm guns were formidable.

I don´t know if the gun trails were placed inside the vehicle, so I cramped the interior as much as I could so that either way the trails aren´t visible.

DAK Sdkfz 7 20mm quad Rapid Fire! style I hope

This is the 2nd Sdkfz 7/1 for the DAK. This one was made following Richard Marsh Rapid Fire! kind of conversions he shows in his last and splendid Monty`s battles.

The chassis is an Hasegawa one given by my friend Jorge Faria (worldwide famous modeller and wargamer from Porto, a little bit like me in Coimbra); the Quad 20mm is an old Esci I had somewhere, and the figures are Esci and Hasegawa bodies with heads from Valiant.

The trailer is scratch built.

Here are the two last brigades for the NVA. I painted the official grey uniform, with some black stripes and cuffs for North Carolina soldiers (Ramseur bgde). The other brigade (O´Neal´s/Alabama) was painted grey also, but with no black stripes.

It´s done : 37 brigades for Lee´s army. Still missing 12 artillery batteries and limbers for the corps reserve artillery.

Now for some last command stands.

Lee and staff, inspired on a painting by Mort Kunstler.

Lee is a Strelets R figure on an Italeri horse.

General Ewell, one of the most blamed for the Gettysburg results. With justice?
Ewell (center figure) is made out of a torso from Revell, legs from an Italeri horseman and a horse also from Italeri.

And finally Union General Sedgwick, VI corps commander (Strelets R).

Here are the last "crisis artillery" stands I managed to do. I remembered to look at some soldier boxes my friend Jorge Faria (from Brigada Tripeira) gave me and I found some napoleonic artillery from Esci and Airfix among hundreds of other figures for other ages.

That allowed me to do 5 more groups (gun+limber), two to finish VI corps artillery, and three to do all XII corps artillery.

ACW- Fire and Fury- 1/72nd Eustis and Wheaton´s brigades in Gettysburg

The two last brigades for the Union VI Corps (Sedgwick´s): Eustis (in front, with Massachussets white flag) and Wheaton´s.

Flag bearers can be easily made from loading figures. Paper flags can easily be printed from the numerous excellent sites available in the Web .

You can also use Confederate figures for Union and vice-versa, in a way that if you have hundreds of stands each can still be unique.

Now only XII Corps is missing for the Union and 2 brigades for the Rebs. But still 31 artillery pieces and limbers(F*****).

1/72nd scale Roman allied Cavalry

Several Hat ( and a few Italeri) all mixed - allied roman; spanish; roman cavalry. These ones, painted white/green, are a 1/3 of the full contingent for Cannae. The other 2 groups will be painted in different colours.

A must for those who try to know more about the ACW. You can order the DVD from Amazon or similar.

It deals with the civil war in the west, the land of the dreaded bushwackers like Quantrill, who is also portrayed in the movie. So not the kind of big battles like Gettysburg or Gods and Generals.

The movie was a fiasco for the film makers, because audiences just didn´t show up but it is very good for those who really like the subject.

This is the Gettysburg Seminary. It´s made of card with glued windows and doors and with a Kinder egg container as the cuppola.

Now the Cemitery Archway, the famous entrance to Cemitery ridge. Also made of card.

The 1st house is made of card. The other ones are resin houses of Serra da Estrela, a Portuguese touristic place, black primed and painted like XIX century american houses.

These two houses are 20mm metal Irregular Miniatures.

Several kinds of protection or hinderance for movement.
Top: Irregular Miniatures snake fence and fenced stonewall.
Bottom: Scratch built snake fence and stonewall.

The kind of grit stonewalls are made of.

After an inspirational wargaming saturday in Lisbon with the Brigada Tripeira, and also a pleasant trip to Palmela to the house of the great modeller Carlos Briz (who doesn´t know him from the Brigada Tripeira site) which included the offer of one of his fabulous 1/144th scale dioramas to each of the visitors, I ended the artillery pictured in the last post.

Here goes some decent pictures, after noticing that the scenery button was better.

ACW -Fire and Fury- 1/72nd scale anti-crisis artillery

After building some 40 sets of artillery for the ACW, limbers included, I started looking at emptying surplus stocks of related items and also saving some money.

This is how you can do it:

1. Pick some wheels, 12/14 spokes, 1/72nd scale man height, from whatever artillery XIX century set.

2. Find some horses in relaxed poses. Napoleonic artillery ones will do, but carve off the shabraques that most have.

3. Build the seats, the central and wheels axis and the bucket out of Evergreen. Use a good reference image, but keep it simple.

4. Pick some old french Esci guns, those we all bought in plenty in the eighties but we used little. Cut the Gribeauval double part of the trail, and glue a Evergreen one part trail, carved and heat-bended to shape. Use the Loctite Super Plastics to bond different plastics. Use surplus napoleonic tubes for the Napoleons 12 Pdr, or build the Whitworth,etc out of Evergreen.

5. Add some of the detail from Evergreen pieces and GreenStuff (the ropes in the middle of the gun trail and saddles).

6. Most of the artilleryman are converted Revell pioneers or Italeri cavalryman.

7. Some Airfix resin cast figures, and some metal Irregular Miniatures also...

8. Et Voilá.

9.No, it´s no oil leak. Use black Krylon Super Plastics for priming.

Latest painting and modelling: this are the famous Birney Zouaves (23rd Pennsylvania), here in representation of Shaler´s bgde, Newton´s division in Fire and Fury brigade rules.

The figures are Hat, with heads from Esci and Revell. The Officers are Italeri.

Jeb Stuart (center) divisional command stand was painted with Hampton´s (center right stand) brigade, and here are the two side by side.

Both armies are at about 80% in Fire and Fury terms, 1/200 that is. Above is Reynolds I corps (Doubleday in command).

Ewell´s II corps. Still Rodes division missing, but Jubal Early´s (see last post) Smith´s brigade is already painted and stored.

A.P. Hill III corps. Hill can be seen in his traditional red shirt and is also a scratchbuilt figure.

Pender´s division.

Anderson´s division.

This period is great for collecting and wargaming. A time and a war in which a few professional soldiers turned a mob of amateurs into heroes. Also last days of chivalry in US history.

Current work on ACW - Fire and Fury rule set, 20mm scale, Gettysburg.

I´ve started ACW in 20mm some 20 to 25 years ago, with a special interest in 1st Bull Run. Most of this material was then repainted or simply given to friends.

Some 10 years ago, i discovered Fire and Fury rule set. Never played a battle, as usual, but those photos kept me hooked- some 1000 figures were painted, and many books were read. The full OB for Gettysburg is now the objective.

Then the film Gettysburg and then Gods and Generals showed up and hooked i was- another 1000 were painted.

Loads of good books existed and recently i bought The Gettysburg Companion by Mark Adkin. Almost everything you need is there.

With these few photos i want to show you my latest work on ACW, still unpainted. Some stuff to end Jubal Early´s confederate division, part of Ewell´s II corps.

The one above is a 10 pdr Parrott, made from a Esci Napoleonic carriage, carved out of surplus items and with its 6pdr barrel fitted with an Evergreen longer tube in one end and GreenStuff on the other.

The artillerymen are infantry figures without weapons and with their arms heated with a lighter into a different position. One of the figures, the yellow one, is a resin cast upper body of an old Airfix cavalryman glued on some Revell legs.

The artillery carriage (and the small bucket) is made out of Evergreen, with Esci wheels from French Imperial artillery (why did we buy dozens of those when we were teenagers? well, now i know).

Horses are Airfix French artillery and the drivers are metal Irregular Miniatures.

Smith´s Brigade, one of the smallest of the ANV.

Jubal Early: after seeing some photos of the real person, three figures were needed from Italeri and Revell, one for the head (with a beard and slouch hat), another for the torso, and another for the legs.
The standard bearer suffered the same fate.

The glue used is Loctite super plastics with activator, which glues polythene pretty well.

1/72nd scale Roman Republican Cavalry

The 8 stands needed for Cannae just out of the varnish spray can. Each stands for 200 men, so this figures represents the 1600 citizen cavalry with Varro, 300 from each legion.

The figures are Hat. At the back you can see the Colosseum.

The shield patterns are difficult to find. Any ideas, besides the Osprey, WRG and Peter Connolly books?

1/72nd scale DBM Roman Camp

Now the Roman camp. Also BUM based, is also largely transformed into what you see.

The defence poles around the camp. The ditch is ...well... around somewhere!

20cmX20cm like the Carthaginian camp.

There is a Zvezda 1/72nd scale fabulous roman camp and the old Airfix one which is also nice. They make a fantastic center piece for a diorama or skirmish action but they are just too big for a battle like Cannae, as it will take too much space on the tabletop, and this one is much cheaper.

The training pole. This place served for gladius hacking training. Probably some slashes were also applyed.

Some Triarii (Hat) just for scale.

I hope José Miguel Mendes (the famous JMM) also likes it.

1/72 scale DBM Carthaginian Camp

This camp is made out of a BUM box with a lot of generic pieces which were completely changed into what you can see. I coundn´t find any good reconstitution of a carthaginian camp , so this is more of a guess than anything else, based in what i know of carthaginian habits and culture. Hope you enjoy.

The camp is 20cm X20cm. If larger, it dwarves the armies and the battle area on the tabletop.

Command stand made of 4 different brands: Hat, Italeri, Esci and Newline Designs.

Here is my 4th roman legion for the Punic wars. Once again figures by Hat, Orion; Italeri and Newline Designs. Only 12 legions to go, for the full roman army at Cannae: piece of cake, just a thousand figures!

You can even see the shadow of the camera in the 1st picture. The guy has talent, look at the position of his finger! A true pro.

You all admire my quality as a modeller and painter, that is why you keep on coming to this site everyday, even when you don´t have electricity, but you seldom refer to my talents regarding photography.

Oh yes, there his a guy from Gaia (south of Porto, near Lisbon) who likes my photos a lot, and who always places nice comments on this blog, regarding the right angle and light.

The tactic at Gaugamela: here goes Alexander on the right ahead of his Companions trying to spread the Persian cavalry further to the right in order to swiftly change direction and attack Darius on the center.

The figures are Hat and Zvezda. There are also some old Atlantic greeks with new heads mostly that were recruited to the rear ranks of the pezhetairoi.

Still the Greek hoplites and the Thracians to do.

28mm Perry Miniatures Prussian Infantry- Steinmetz 1st Brigade

Here is the missing brigade for me to have all the Prussian infantry for Waterloo/Plancenoit.

12th Infantry regiment, with reserve black jackets. The flag carrier is a Hat Bavarian transformed. I glued a paper flag to the plastic. It is a little thick but passable. Officer and drummer also Hat Bavarians transformed.

24th Infantry Regiment, with reserve grey jackets.

The 26th Infantry regiment, not Steinmetz brigade but Kraft´s 6th Bgde, build and painted at the same time.

Detail of the command stand with a pioneer made of Hat body and a Perry head with a beard in Greentuff. All other figures are also Hat bodies and Perry heads.

All flags in this post are conjectural and unofficial, as in theory none of this regiments sported any flag.

Hat-Perry hard plastic figures 28mm comparison

This post is to be read by people who like to buid armies and not for those who like to spread jealousy all over with their painting and modelling skills. If you are in the 2nd group, read no more.

I´ve watched with a certain surprise, or not, in the last few years, the democratic birth of hard plastic 28mm historical figures: the scale of the "true" wargamers. Suddenly some "true" wargamers were painting and playing with inferior quality figures made of metal, when compared to the Perry Miniatures or Victrix plastic range for instance.

Well, this "true" wargamers scale is constantly forgetting that besides Perry (the finest hard plastic without any shadow of a doubt), Victrix (the finest...also),Warlord (very,very good) and a few more i didn´t buy yet, there is another poor manufacturer who in the last few years produced hundreds of fantastic boxes of 20mm figures covering dozens of conflicts, and with an average excellent quality.

More important to this short information of this truly yours, Hat also produce 28mm hard plastic figures( Napoleonic and early middle ages)! Yes, those you can cut and glue different heads and stuff, while the opposite is true in metal!! Some 20 boxes up to the moment!! Yes, it is true, they do, believe me!! Ok, their napoleonics aren´t as good as Perry´s. But hey, the Perry brothers are probably the best sculptors in the world so the competition is one sided. Also with surprise, in the main british two wargames magazines there isn´t a single word about Hat 28mm in the vast majority of their articles when they say something about hard plastic 28mm figures ("England will prevail", Churchill Dixit). Well everyone knows one of them is dependent and the other is independent, but both strongly and understandably ( i wish the same happened in Portugal...) defending their own cottage industries.

Specially for those outside UK, Hat figures- U.S, but made in China- are easily available and deserve a word, better, many photos. To my knowledge and humble opinion, Hat 28mm figures aren´t inferior to many metal manufacturers, and they are many times cheaper and easily available with French, Bavarian and Prussian infantry in different marching, in action, and command boxes, and with many more nations on the pipeline. Hat only loses when compared to manufacturers of the Perry Miniatures caliber.

Nevertheless, judge for yourself.

I mix Perry and Hat figures in the same stand (see other posts) or even switch heads and i think Hat fits well with Perry.

I know the photos aren´t good (i´m a great and humble modeller and painter but a lousy photographer) but in groups, small or big- as you can see in previous posts- Hat figures goes reasonably well with others. They are true 28mm figures and not 30mm as many tend to do.

Yes, i wish Hat produced them a bit larger, but they are cheap, realistic and very well researched figures, not to Calpe standards it is true, but figures you can paint easily and build armies with. And have fun, which is the most important aspect of our hobby.

Most of the figures are Hat, Italeri and Revell but there are also many metal Newline Design and even some 15mm Irregular Miniatures that look like 20mm as they are large castings . 1815 Landwehr prussians (from French Hat 28mm figures)

Just some notes on this previously published photos.

Some more prussians. This ones are made out of the Hat French light infantry boxes, both voltigeurs and carabineers. As they have the pre-Bardin uniform period i bought them for nothing, just because they were new ( i do the previous period in 20mm).

So with some Greenstuff to their litewka and blankets and burned heads/shakos(Perry) to produce the schirmütze, you can have original Landwehr figures. This ones are for the Pommeranian regiments.

The mounted officer is a metal Warlord figure.

1815 Prussian Perry Miniatures 28mm

Here are my 1st painted Perry Prussian infantry 28mm. They are great figures, slightly bigger than Hat, and more detailed.

Painting process: apply a matt acrylic black spray all over figures; then paint faces/lips /eyes so you can talk to your soldiers individually (great friends they are, as they always agree with you); paint always the darker tone first followed by the lighter tone (50% darker tone+50% white), at least in the uniform and larger areas. Start from the inside details of the figures (cloth) and end with the outside details (weapons and equipment). Two coats of varnish in the end separated by a couple of hours: gloss and then matt.

2nd and 9th infantry Regiment (they woke up very early in the morning...).

In the middle of the 2nd rank you can see a Hat Bavarian sapper with a glued Perry head and greenstuffed beard and blanket.

This army is still on its beginnings as my purpose is to build the 16 legions that faced the Carthaginian army in Cannae (next army to show, but as you will see it will take a little bit more pictures to show them all).
So here are the first 3 Roman legions. They are all based for DBM.
You can see Velites (near the camera), Hastati, Princeps and Triarii following in all legions.
Mainly Hat, with Odemars, Italeri and metal Newline Design figures and some officers, signifer and aquilifer from Esci.

Battle of Aljubarrota 1385 in 20mm-1/72nd scale

Now i will show you my 20mm figures for the Battle of Aljubarrota, fought in 1385 between the portuguese and the castillians/french. The first six pictures are from the french part which was massacred after being caught between the portuguese vanguard and rearguard. And massacre it was, as by then most of the french knights and retinues were prisoners and unarmed. But the sight of the Castillian cavalry massing for the 2nd and final assault made the Mestre de Avis and Nuno Alvares Pereira (declared Saint, in 2009???) ordering their throats to be cut by the peasantry.

The figures are from Strelets r, Zvezda, Italeri and Revell. Still plenty to do as usual in large armies. They are based for the portuguese Arcane rules by Jerboa, with a ratio of 100 to a stand.

You can see Revell german winter infantry just repainted for the desert and also a figure from the pioneer box.

New heads and equipment for these ones.

Chinese airfix (bigger) goes well with the old Atlantic figures i like so much (PSR site don´t but that is ok for me).

New heads for these Hat figures from another Hat set glued with normal pastic cement (great improvement, don´t need to stick my fingers with nails no more).

28mm Prussian army 1815

This are some photos of my prussian 28mm army for the 100 days campaign. This one shows Blücher and some of his staff (Perry plastic and Warlord metal).

6th Hussar. Perry french hussar with greenstuff on shakos. To make them more prussians i should have not included the pelisses, but i like them this way.

8th Hussar. Same as above, different uniforms that included the famous Death hussars all clad in black.

The landwehr are warlord plastic with some metals as command. Some of them have Perry Miniatures heads with shakos replacing the Warlord heads- the wonders of hard plastic...

2nd Elbe Landwehr.

Lutzow freikorps (now 25th infantry regiment).

Na 1º imagem está uma miniatura da Capela de Santo António do Cântaro, que me obrigou a várias idas ao local e a medições a olho já que estava um cão solto por perto e o cabrão não se calava.

Os moinhos, o convento e a capela do encarnadouro (actual museu militar), são uns velhinhos kits em cartão vendidos no próprio museu há já muitos anos, feitos por uma marca inglesa de que não me recordo o nome.

As miniaturas são da Hat, italeri, revell, newline, irregular, sendo os oficiais a cavalo transformações de tudo e mais alguma coisa.

Batalha do Buçaco- Battle of Buçaco 1810

Seguem algumas fotos das minhas figuras de 20mm para a reconstituição da batalha do Buçaco-27 de setembro de 1810. São cerca de 2500 figuras e estiveram nas instalações do Hotel do Buçaco para as comemorações dos 200 anos do evento. À esquerda as colunas de Reynier, saídas de Santo António do Cântaro e da Pendurada, procuram os altos da serra junto ao moinho de Leith para aí virarem à direita e juntarem-se às colunas de Ney que também sobem a serra, à direita, saídas de Moura. Os ingleses e portugueses, estes sem dúvida gajos do Sporting, não vão deixar que tal aconteça.

Pessoal é para ver. Filme Italiano de 2003. Bem feito com história engraçada. Saquem-no do youtube em 10 partes. A reconstituição está bem feita com material da época. O senão são os Sherman finais que são na realidade Leopard.

Dear friends:
after almost a full year without posting anything, i will show you Tarawa island, a battle i prepared for using Rapid Fire! rules. Everything is up to 20mm scale. The majority of the items are scratchbuilt and only the zeroes are plastic kits, the smaller artillery are Frontline Wargaming, the infantry, Esci and such.
The trees are from birthday cakes, the toillets are wooden ones (they used them on the shore so the sea could clean the mess and avoid deseases).

Regras para a batalha do Álamo e Guerra da Independência do Texas (Figuras de 20mm)
Definições
a) Unidade é um conjunto de 4 companhias (+/- 24 fig. de infantaria (inf); ou 12 de cavalaria (Cv); ou 10 Cazadores/Caz), incluindo uma fig. de um oficial ou bandeira (Caz não precisam destes), separadas de outra unidade por uma base.

b) Unidade tem que manter Coerência (base com base), devido ao treino da época.

c) Cazadores e Texanos (Tex) devem lutar até 3 cm uns dos outros.

d) Base é 1 quadrado de 2,5cmx2,5cm com duas figuras (ou uma, no caso de heróis e Cazadores), representando cada figura, 2 a 5 homens.

e) Jogador escolhe por unidade, em cada lanço, ou movimento (Mov) ou fogo.

f) Fases do jogo são jogadas alternadamente entre os adversários (Ex: fogo do jogador A; depois fogo do jogador B)

g) Fases:
1-Moral
2-Detecção
3-Movimento
4- Fogo
5- Corpo-a-Corpo

1-Moral
a) Tex. no Álamo e em São Jacinto não sofrem penalidades; nem Zapadores (Zap.) e Granaderos (Gran.), (exceptuando estes quando cercados por 2 lados, ou com 50% de baixas).

b) Situações negativas:

c) Situação positiva: Se houver um herói colado à unidade em teste, todos os resultados são diminuídos para metade (7,8,5,3,1, não contam). O mesmo se aplica se a unidade em causa tiver outra atrás à distância de uma base. As duas situações positivas juntas, inspiradoras de coragem, eliminam a necessidade de teste de moral.

2- Detecção
a) Dia – bases detectadas a 100cm automaticamente.

b) Noite – bases detectadas até 60 cm max. (D6; detecção de 10 cm em 10 cm; Ex: 1= 10 cm e 6 = 60 cm).

3- Movimento

a) Inf. em linha, 10 cm; em coluna, 15 cm.; Inf. à carga, 20 cm máx durante 1 lanço ( 5 lanços de intervalo, duas vezes por jogo).

b) Cv. 15 cm.

c) Cv. à carga 25 cm durante 2 lanços (5 lanços de intervalo, duas vezes por jogo).

d) Art. a pé 5 cm.

e) Art. rebocada 10 cm; 20 cm em estrada.

f) Art. perde lanço completo a montar peça.

g) Derrube de escadas, base defensiva não dispara nesse lanço. (Resultado D6, 4+ e a escada cai; + 1 nº por D6 se no 2º lanço por a escada já ter mais bases a subi-la, e assim sucessivamente).

h) No lanço após encosto de escada no muro, pode já estar uma base atacante sobre o muro.

i) Penalização em terreno difícil, é igual a D6 em cms.
j) Mov. por destruição da base vizinha pode ser automático, e não conta como Mov.

4- Fogo

b) Depois de se indicar a unidade alvo, não se pode alterar.

c) Efeito é sobre 1 base.

d) Atingido escolhe bases a retirar dentro da unidade ( a excepção são os Caz. que o atirador escolhe quando dirige o fogo).

e) Alvo : -1 se atrás de abrigo mole.
-2 se atrás de abrigo duro (base no muro que dispara sobre os 2 primeiros ranks junto ao muro, passa a -1).
Atirador : +2 se disparo é para os dois primeiros ranks junto ao muro.

f) Efeito do Schrapnell é sobre 2 bases. Para Rounshot lançar D6= 1,2 ,3 é uma base; 4,5,6 são 2 bases.

g) Art normal (roundshot) com D6 de 1, tiro perdido.

h) Defensores do Álamo disparam 2 vezes nos 2 primeiros lanços de fogo.

i) Art. perde primeiros 15 cm de alcance se em cima de muro. Os artilheiros podem passar aí a ser uma base de Inf.

j) Art tem 45º sem penalização de um lanço.

l) Todo o fogo é dirigido à base mais próxima (excluindo fogo dos heróis).

5- Corpo - a - Corpo
a) Primazia é para quem ataca em campo aberto (em simultâneo, lança-se dado por unidade).
b) Primazia é para quem defende em cima de muro contra subidores de escadas ou escaladores.
c) Tabela de Corpo-a-Corpo.

c) Crockett dispara a 80 cm , começando aí com 3-.
d) Santa Anna inspira terror e obediência cega.
e) Mov. é de 10 cm; Cv, de 30cm.

Destruição de Portas (D10)
a) 2 pioneiros, até 6.
b) 1 pioneiro, até 3.
c) Passa 1 base de cada vez, depois de abertas.

Escalada
a) Base atacante pode-se apoiar na Parede Norte para escalar, demorando um lanço completo.

Tácticas
a) Unidades avançam em coluna e podem, por unidade e na presença de um oficial, criar uma linha de fogo, perdendo um lanço completo.
b) Cazadores avançam sempre à frente das outras bases.
c) As unidades podem mudar de rumo perdendo dois lanços no total (linha original/coluna/linha, por exemplo); em cada lanço o resultado de D6 de 1, impossibilita essa manobra; sob fogo, 1 e 2.
d) Unidades de elite (Tenn; Granad; Zap) não fazem este último teste.
e) Unidades reduzidas podem ser amalgamadas por herói, desde que não distem deste mais de 15 cm.

Nota
a) Não são possíveis medições prévias antes das decisões de mover ou fazer fogo.

Dear modellers and wargamers. I´m starting my page now and i´m no expert on this. I have loads of things i would like to show you, mainly in 20mm, but also in 15mm and in 28mm. The following pictures is of the Alamo. I´ve made it mainly in Roofmate; the texans are Imex and the Mexicans mainly napoleonics. Hope you like it.
