Rapid Fire! 20mm- 21st Panzer Division, Normandy 1944- Pt 1

    

The 21st Panzer division always filled my imagination since a little boy, with all that tranformed material from outdated French 1940 Somua, H-39, P-107 etc, which also included Russian guns.

Unfortunately this unit can only be properly done with those expensive resin and metal kits from France and England, but I made use of the much more affordable plastic and conversions whenever possible. On the other hand, having to buy (carefully...) expensive material you are forced to take extra care on the way you research, build and paint this big unit.

With 200 miniatures AFV´s this unit was made along several years with breaks for starting or coming back to other periods of wargaming. Due to this you can see different styles of painting both on vehicles and figures.

In this first part you will see 22nd Pz Regiment; Pz Artillery Regiment 155 and Pz Reconnaissance 21.

The foliage I apply on all AFV is made of a hand mixture of HO train  foliage + white PVA glue from several brands. The material gets tough and can be handled by  any clumsy hands.

The crewman are Preiser in 1/72nd scale from their Panzer crew at rest box.

This unit is exagerated in numbers but I just can't resist when I find one.

The only added parts to the Britannia model was the periscope; antenna and folliage/stowage.

The Raventhorpe P-107 AA carries a Britannia crew.

 The recce  infantry is Irregular Miniatures infantry with some plastic ESCI and Revell's help. The infantry sports the caracteristic waterproof garments of the 21st PD.

There is no indication that the 21st Pz division had the Sdkfz 263 but this guy gave too much work to be left aside from this unit. Parts from Airfix and Evergreen on the hull of a Matchbox Puma with an aerial from ESCI 251 HT.

 In the next few days I hope to be able to take some shots for the 2nd and last part of this post contemplating the infantry, pionneer and AA units of this division.

AOE 20mm - Marchand Division - Battle of Buçaco 1810

A few miles from Reynier Corps stood Ney II Corps at Sula village. This division is Marchand´s.

Maucune (heavily transformed figure) is leading his brigade: 6eme legére in line (mainly Esci figures with wrong uniform...) and 69eme ligne (Hat figures).

Massena itself, commander of the Armée du Portugal: The tiger shabraque is Miliput and Massena´s body is Italeri with a large bicorne from a russian general by StreletsR.

My father showed up at the backyard when this photos were being taken. I grew up looking at his work as a great painter and collector.  It was thanks to him that you can see this blog, as he has always been a miniature lover with thousands of 1/43rd and 1/24th scale cars and HO scale trains, planes, motorcycles and in fact everything that moves.

 

As a peace loving guy he kept collecting, building and painting his peaceful minis, while his son drifted to the Ratatatata stuff...

 

He keeps his minis at the attic on two small rooms while I have the full basement for me... he, he...

AOE 20mm - Heudelet 2nd division + Cavalry Bgde, P.Soult - Battle of Buçaco 1810

After Merle Division, here comes Gen. Heudelet Division and Soult Cavalry brigade, thus finishing Reynier Corps.

The larger houses at the far end are paper typical houses. I have these since I can remember and recently they were based and retouched with paint and PVA glue. They are Ok for places like Santo António do Cântaro and Pendurada, the places from were Reynier columns left for the attack.

The smaller houses are resin made and were bought in a Serra da Estrela handicraft shop and repainted.

Here it comes Gen. de Brigade M.S. Foy ahead of his 17eme Légere, after being spiked by his superior officer, Gen. Reynier, to attack. Most of the figures are Italeri and Foy itself is based on the Airfix American officer of the war of independence.

Arnould Brigade: 31eme Légere ahead (most of the figures are Zvezda and Esci and Airfix Imperial guardsmen with ESCI shakos), 47eme Ligne following (Hat).

 Soult cavalry Brigade: Hanoverian Chasseurs (Revell Household cavalry with ESCI shakos) ; 22eme Chasseurs à cheval (same recipe as before) ; 1er Hussares (Italeri) and 8th Dragoons (ESCI).

AOE 28mm Waterloo 1815 - 2nd Coldstream guards

A small detour on a new unit in 28mm for the Waterloo campaign, just fresh out of the paint brushes.

With my French and Prussian army accelerating to completion, the British have been left aside. That red and grey is not very appealing but the Coldstream guards in those white trousers bring a little bit more of colour to the shelves.

The command figures were extended over three stands as there were a metal officer on horse and a pioneer as well as the usual flag, drum, NCO and officer to be placed on this elite unit.

The figures are plastic and metal Perry Miniatures. The skirmishers don´t count in AOE brigade level rules terms but are there just in case another level rule set is used.

The flags were printed from the Warflag site. Thanks for all those guys that for nothing in exchange leave fantastic material for others to use.
