AOE 28mm Waterloo - The Plancenoit wall

Many years ago I bought this little church in a Chinese shop and somehow it looked like the Plancenoit church. Having the wall of the church is mandatory as it was the focus of the battle much more than the church itself. The space between the church and the wall is just enough for the 4cm width bases I use for 28mm.

The perimeter of the wall should be small as well as the church itself as I intend to have the full Waterloo terrain on the table.

A great piece of inspiration came from the Napoleonic Archive books on Waterloo with this fantastic Plancenoit ...

... and a trip to the place made the rest.

While making lots of terrain for Bir Hakeim thin slices of Blue Board came out and were used for the round shape of the wall. The material bends quite well and is carved easily.

This piece of terrain can also be used in many scales as a walled garden...

... or the center of a chateau.

Next: Little Big Horn most probably along with more Bir Hakeim.

AOE 28mm Waterloo - Hougoumont compound and La Haie Sainte

From the French lines you would have a certain difficulty trying to grasp the size and importance of  Hougoumont in the morning of the Waterloo battle, adding to that some poor reconnaissance and maps.

Now you can't see them but on those days the woods of Hougoumont hide the complex from French eyes which led Napoleon not to pay the attention it deserved with catastrophic consequences for his side.

The model of Hougoumont is an old Draper model bought from Miniatures Wargames a few years ago and I think still available.

I followed mainly this drawing from the Carnets de la Campagne Vol.1, dedicated to Hougoumont.

But in order to portray the full Hougoumont complex you need an orchard with an hedgerow looking at the French side ...

... and a garden enclosed by a new outer brick wall and an inner masonry wall.

The pigeon house doesn't come in the model so you need to build it. This one is from card. I also made some thatched roofs using old pieces of linen as on the model on the Waterloo cyclorama.

The famous South Gate of Hougoumont.

The model of the chateau is designed for 20mm but goes well with 28mm as the true Hougoumont in 28mm fills any decent table leaving no room for anything else.

Let's move a bit to the east.

La Haie Sainte is the Airfix model with a few additions.

It's necessary a small orchard looking south and a pond inside the farm...

... and also a garden looking north.

And here you have two of the main "breakwaters" of Wellington.

AOE 28mm Waterloo 1815 - 2nd Coldstream guards

A small detour on a new unit in 28mm for the Waterloo campaign, just fresh out of the paint brushes.

With my French and Prussian army accelerating to completion, the British have been left aside. That red and grey is not very appealing but the Coldstream guards in those white trousers bring a little bit more of colour to the shelves.

The command figures were extended over three stands as there were a metal officer on horse and a pioneer as well as the usual flag, drum, NCO and officer to be placed on this elite unit.

The figures are plastic and metal Perry Miniatures. The skirmishers don´t count in AOE brigade level rules terms but are there just in case another level rule set is used.

The flags were printed from the Warflag site. Thanks for all those guys that for nothing in exchange leave fantastic material for others to use.

28mm AOE 1815 Waterloo - Bachelu Division

Latest painting that completes the 22nd July post. This Bachelu division was built and painted along  some extras like the Génie de La Garde Imperiále and the Gén. Reille stand, II Armée CO.

I present you Général Gilbert Bachelu (uau , he speaks french...!) , a very nice metal figure by the Perry brothers.

Here our Général is personally deploying his own division, under the watchful eye of his superior Gen. Charles Reille. The first brigade to be seen is Campi´s (General Campi is a metal Perry mounted figure within the commmand stand) and the second is Husson´s.

Reille and ADC are also metal Perry.

The Génie de La Garde Imperiále, plastic conversions of Hat bodies and Perry Carabiniers heads, as mentioned in previous post.

Back view of the Génie.

The lot: Bachelu division, Reille and Génie. Only one brigade missing to complete Reille II Corps.

28mm AOE Waterloo 1815 11th Cuirassiers

After looking for some different Cuirassiers Regiments I found that there were some that didn´t sported the breastplate. That was the case of the 11th regiment. The Perry box has all its excellent models with cuirasses but the Perry dragoon´s are good for these conversions.

These figures represent the 11th Cuirassiers of Guiton´s bgde , III Reserve Cavalry Corps. So my III corps will be added with this regiment and one of the previous regiment (red collar) will pass to Milhaud IV Reserve Cavalry Corps and will represent Travers bgde.

The main conversions to change dragoons into un-cuirassed cuirassiers is to place cuirassiers heads and place a Greenstuff rolled blanket on the torso. Also some Greenstuff epaulettes on everybody shoulders and that´s it (or just use Elite dragoons straight from the box).

In this way the repetitive task of building all Cuirassiers brigades in Waterloo gets a little more enthusiastic.

28mm AOE Waterloo 1815 - III French Cavalry Reserve Corps (Kellerman)

The full III French Cavalry Reserve Corps in AOE terms, just out of the brush.

Top left- Guiton Cuirassiers; top right- Blancard Carabiniers; bottom right-Picquet Dragoons; bottom left-Donop Cuirassiers.

All figures are plastic Perry Miniatures.

The blue paper seems to work nicely for these napoleonic figures. I´ve seen it in the Napoleonic Archive booklets about Waterloo. They were also suggested by my good friend PC who knows everything about photos as he works in the porn industry (hey... as a photographer...) and you can see his constant nice remarks on this blog, regarding lingerie and stuff.

28mm AOE Casualty Markers Waterloo 1815

This Landwehr casualty markers are Irregular Miniatures napoleonic casualties. There is added Greenstuff to produce the lower part of the Litewka and rolled blankets.

Prussian line casualty markers, again Irregular Miniatures, with some added Green Stuff.

Perry Miniatures plastic casualty markers that are inside the heavy cavalry box. Some have different head gear and one of them is a Irregular Miniature figure.

Same with the british.

28mm AOE Middle Guard Chasseurs Waterloo 1815

Let me stress this: i´m not taking lousy pictures to my fantastic figures and models for you - the "followers"-  to leave two ENTIRE posts without a single comment. No faithful follower do what you have been doing, neglecting your duty, men or women must rise as one and shout: extraordinary work and such.
Yes, my 1st follower was a woman (<3) but all She and He for me are the same. No prejudice, I love you all, well, some more  than others Ok, so lets start writing comments  on the previous posts and don´t forget the next ones.

Now that you all ran to the previous posts, and wrote avidly your comment, here it is the French Middle Guard Chasseurs.

It´s the usual mix of the three main brands of 28mm plastics, were pieces are mixed all together and easily glued and carved as only this material enables.

The guidons and uniforms are taken from the fantastic mont-saint-jean website http://centjours.mont-saint-jean.com/. You don´t need more than this to paint your Waterloo armies.
